We all use a variety of internet-connected devices every day, from smartphones to laptops, to tablets. But when was the last time you thought about how secure your personal information is on these items? Here are some easy tips to keep in mind:
1. Be social media savvy. Location features that allow anyone you are friends with to see exactly where you bring risks. Protect yourself by disabling the GPS, webcam and microphone settings on your devices. Post and tag photos with the location after you’ve left.
2. Secure your webcam. It’s a privacy nightmare to think someone has remotely hijacked your webcam and is watching you without your knowledge. Although unlikely, if your laptop or desktop has a built-in webcam, be sure to have good computer security software installed. Good web browsers should also notify you if your webcam is being activated.
3. Practice Wi-Fi wisdom. When setting the password for your Wi-Fi network, always follow basic guidelines for establishing strong passwords. Consider changing your home network’s default name — don’t use anything that could be associated with your name, address or phone number.
4. Dispose of digital devices safely. Whether you’re recycling, selling or giving away your old device, make sure all personal information has been backed up and then wiped. For mobile devices, first, encrypt the device or software and then run a factory reset.
