(NC)-Bringing a new puppy or kitten into your home is one of life’s highlights. “Getting the relationship with a new pet off to the right start requires equal parts care, nurturing and guidance,” says veterinarian Dr. David Cook. “All of these things contribute to the physical and emotional well-being of your pet.” Dr. Cook suggests pet owners follow these five steps to build a healthy foundation with their new puppy or kitten.
Step One: Pet-proof your home – Before bringing your new pet home, make sure it won’t be able to get at the string, ribbon, yarn, small household items or medication that can be swallowed. Some houseplants can be toxic for pets if ingested, and should therefore be moved to a safe location.
Step Two: Choose the right food – Make sure to feed your pet food that is appropriate for his or her life stage, starting with a pet food precisely formulated for puppies and/or kittens.
Step Three: Housetrain your pet – Train your puppy by routinely taking him to the desired area and allowing him to sniff around. Set a kitten’s litter box up in a convenient location and keep it clean.
Step Four: Encourage positive behaviour – Reward your puppy with treats immediately following good behaviour. Never swat, spank, shake or yell at your puppy or kitten or engage in behaviour that could cause them to be frightened of you.
Step Five: Be a responsible pet owner – Schedule regular visits with your veterinarian for immunizations and examinations and to ensure the optimal health of your pet.
