Sleep is a key factor in keeping the body and mind happy and healthy. Unfortunately, we are not getting enough, with one in seven of us suffering from insomnia.
Studies have shown that not getting the recommended amount of sleep (seven to eight hours for adults) can lead to some scary effects on the body including:
• Diminished problem solving and creativity skills.
• A compromised immune system.
• Weight gain.
• Long and short term memory loss.
• Higher risk of strokes and heart disease.
This research has shown that it does not take long for the impact of sleep deprivation to affect the body in a negative way. After just one week of not getting the proper amount, the risk of heart disease and depression increases.
So how does a person make sure they get enough sleep each night?
Advisors tell us simple little changes can be made. Make sure, for example, that the cell phone, TV, and computer are turned off an hour before bed. This slows down the mind and helps prepare the body for dozing off.
