More than just a nuisance, mold can grow in damp or wet areas that result from everyday activities like cooking or showering, and can cause health concerns. If you’re trying to prevent or deal with mold, check out this handy guide for great tips and advice.
How to detect it. Inspect your home for visible signs of mold or areas with too much moisture. Look for dampness, stains or discolouration on floors, walls, window panes, fabrics, and carpets.
Prevent it. Look for damp spots and repair water leaks as soon as you notice them. Use exhaust fans when cooking or showering and let them run for a few minutes after you’re done. Seal tubs and sinks, and regularly clean and disinfect anything that holds water.
DIY clean up. You can generally clean small and moderate areas of mold by yourself. Wear safety glasses or goggles, a disposable dust mask and rubber gloves. Isolate the area by taping plastic sheeting to the walls and ceiling. Clean the mold by using water and dish detergent (there’s no need to use bleach), and vacuum the area.
Consider hiring a professional if there’s a large amount of black mold in your home.
